This
group was formed to protect the built environment of the Central
Goldfields Shire.
Our
members are, without exception, middle-aged - ratepayers -
not radical members of a 'minority'.
Many
errors have been made in the past in all communities. The
removal of shop verandahs in the shopping strip of almost
every town and city during the 1960's is perhaps the best
known example of this. Most communities today are replacing
those verandahs because it makes their community more visually
appealing and therefore welcoming to the residents and visitors.
In
the Central Goldfields Shire we have a unique built environment.
The civic square of Maryborough is unique. Our streetscape
in Nolan Street is almost fully intact. Visitors comment on
the many early cottages which still line our streets. Our
station, Princess Park and Olympic Swimming Pool are just
some of the structures protected by Heritage Victoria, The
National Trust or both. Our Historic mining sites are protected
by the scores.
Yet
errors of the past are still being repeated, with destruction
often being seen as a necessary way to creation.
This
group seeks to allow the Central Goldfields Shire to grow
and develop without the loss of what our pioneers created
in order to make this very community.
New
does not mean the old has to be destroyed!
We
don't 'live in the past' - we are keeping the past for future
generations who will truly value it.
