ROBERT FERRIER YOUNG
By April Minter This is the story of my Uncle Robert Ferrier Young, and the time he spent in WW11.
![]() VX28633 Private Robert Ferrier YOUNG, third son of Edward Warwick & Isabella YOUNG (nee Ferrier),
was born at Campbells Creek Victoria on 21st November 1900. Robert
attended school at Slaty Creek, and was later employed on a district
property until he enlisted on the 6th June 1940. He was aged 40 years
and 7 months. On his army record it said he was born in 1899 as Bob put
his age down to get in the army.On the 5th February 194
1, he sailed on the "MAURITANIA" from Melbourne for overseas service with the 2/23rd
Battalion. The 2/23rd Battalion was founded in Albury N.S.W. and most
of the men in the 2/23rd came from Albury. Having calling in at ports in
INDIA, and then on to SUEZ. He arrived in the Middle East on the 23rd March 1941. On the 18th April 1941 he was in CAIRO and
while he was there he ended up in hospital with an attack of
Tonsillitis on the 18th July 1941 and he rejoined his battalion on the
24th July 1941. While Bob was in CAIRO he met his future brother-in-law Raymond WHITTAKER. When Bob had time off in CAIRO Bob went sight seeing at places like the CAIRO ZOO, the PYRAMIDS and in EGYPT he went to the Tea House Gardens. He also went to Panarama Tiberas and the Railways Station at TEL EL EISA.CAIRO ZOO While also in the Middle East Bob witness a soldier been buried. Bob later served in GREECE and CRETE.
After serving 2 years in the Middle East he left there on the 29th
January 1943, arriving back in Sydney on the 28th February 1943.Bob stayed in Australia until the 2nd September 1943 when he embarked on the "TAROONA" for service in NEW GUINEA arriving there on the 13th September 1943. He also spent time on the islands too. Bob was to spend 9 months in NEW GUINEA before he returned to Sydney on the 11th June 1944. Bob was to spend 1019 days overseas, after receiving his discharge at Royal Park Melbourne on the 14th June 1944. Bob was to return to his former employer in Slaty Creek. Bob was to meet Vera JOHNS in St Arnaud Victoria and they were married on the 30th June 1945 in the Presbyterian Church in St Arnaud. They had four children; Heather Lorraine, Gloria Joyce, Robert Leonard & Peter Donald.

Bob worked for the Talford family on a property in Slaty Creek. While he was on the property he worked with 13 Clydesdale horses. Bob
worked there for about 7 years before he and his family moved to St
Arnaud in Silvermine Road. They were living there when they daughter
Gloria passed away at the age of 20 years. YDESDALES Bob's name is on the Slaty Creek honour roll. The Slaty Creek 1939 -45 World War honour roll must be unique, because all of the men whose names are recorded, served in the army and all returned! Bob passed away on the 10th June 1972 in St Arnaud at the age of 72 years and is buried in the St Arnaud Cemetery with his daughter Gloria. |
